Cursor
Cursor is an AI code editor made by Anysphere, which SpaceX bought in Aug 2026. It has a free plan; paid plans run from $8 to $200 a month, and OpenAI has said it will stop supplying its models to Cursor on Nov 12, 2026.
Cursor is an AI code editor made by Anysphere, which SpaceX completed buying for $60 billion in stock on Aug 14, 2026. As of Nov 6, 2026 it has a free plan and paid plans of $8, $30, $100 and $200 a month; its own Composer and Grok models sit beside models from Anthropic, Google and others. Its strengths are an agent that edits across a whole project, fast Tab completion, cloud agents that work while you are away, and Bugbot code review.
Cursor suits developers who want an AI-first editor with a choice of models. Pick something else if you want OpenAI's models in your editor after Nov 12, 2026 (Codex or GitHub Copilot), a terminal agent tied to one model family (Claude Code), or a free, open-source extension (Cline). The Best AI Coding Agent guide compares them.

Pricing has been a sore point before. In Jun 2025 Cursor swapped Pro's 500 monthly requests for $20 of model usage at API rates, then apologized on Jul 4, 2025, saying it had not made clear that unlimited use applied only to Auto, and offered refunds for surprise charges from Jun 16 to Jul 4.
Features
Agent. Cursor's agent reads the project, edits many files, runs terminal commands and checks its own work. Cursor 2.0 (Oct 29, 2025) rebuilt the window around agents rather than files and lets several run at once in separate git worktrees, with the classic editor still a click away. In Fireship's Oct 30, 2025 video, Claude, GPT-5 and Composer built the same button in parallel worktrees, and Composer finished first.
Composer. Cursor's own coding model, introduced with 2.0, which Cursor described as "4x faster than similarly intelligent models." The current version on its models page is Composer 2.5.
Cloud agents and automations. On Premium and above, agents run on Cursor's machines and open pull requests. The changelog added an Agent SDK on Oct 20, 2026 and, on Nov 5, 2026, cloud agents that build a web app with a Postgres database and publish it to a shareable link after security checks.
Bugbot. Automatic AI review of pull requests, included from Premium up.
Tab. Multi-line completions that predict your next edit.
The SpaceX deal and OpenAI's exit
SpaceX said in Apr 2026 it could buy Cursor for $60 billion later that year or pay $10 billion for their work together (CNBC, Apr 21, 2026), signed the deal in June (TechCrunch, Jun 16, 2026) and closed it on Aug 14. On Aug 28, OpenAI said it would end its supply agreement and proposed Nov 12, 2026 as the date its models leave Cursor, saying it "cannot be confident" SpaceX would follow its terms. Cursor's CEO Michael Truell said OpenAI models served about 5% of Cursor traffic (CNBC, Aug 29, 2026). On Nov 6, 2026 Cursor's models page still listed GPT models and gave no end date.
Cursor vs the alternatives
- GitHub Copilot: cheaper to start ($10 a month), plugs into your existing editor and GitHub itself, and keeps OpenAI's models. Pick it if your team lives on GitHub.
- Claude Code: Anthropic's agent for the terminal, IDEs, desktop and web, included in Claude's $20 Pro plan. Pick it for long autonomous tasks on Claude models.
- Codex: OpenAI's agent, included even in ChatGPT Free. Pick it if you want GPT models after Nov 12.
- Windsurf: now Devin Desktop from Cognition, also an agent-first editor with a free plan and a $20 Pro plan.
- Cline: an open-source extension where you bring your own API key.
