Best AI Image Generator
The best AI image generator in Nov 2026, by both LMArena and Artificial Analysis votes, is OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5 in ChatGPT, with Google's Nano Banana 2.1, Microsoft's MAI-Image-2.6 and SpaceXAI's Grok Imagine close behind. Adobe Firefly is the pick for commercially safe work and Flux for open weights.
The best AI image generator as of Nov 6, 2026 is OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5: its two versions, Sunburst and Flare, hold first and second place on both LMArena's Text-to-Image leaderboard (updated Nov 2, 2026) and Artificial Analysis's Image Arena, and it also leads image editing. Behind it, Google's Nano Banana 2.1, Microsoft's MAI-Image-2.6 and SpaceXAI's Grok Imagine Image 2.0 trade places in the top ten. For commercial work where legal safety matters, Adobe Firefly is the pick; for open weights you can run yourself, Flux and Qwen-Image.
Two well-known names are missing from both leaderboards: Midjourney and Adobe's own Firefly models are not ranked there, so their place cannot be compared by these votes; judge them by their galleries and free trials rather than a score. In a May 10, 2026 video, Dan Kieft called Midjourney (then V8.1) a tool for artists, highly customizable through its parameters and a personal aesthetic it learns from your ratings, with an explore page full of other people's work, but less ready out of the box than Nano Banana or GPT Image 2.

Sources: LMArena Text-to-Image, updated Nov 2, 2026, 84 models and about 6.96 million votes; Artificial Analysis Image Arena, read Nov 6, 2026. Scores are Elo-style ratings from blind votes between two images; the two sites use different scales, so compare ranks, not numbers. Several top LMArena scores are marked preliminary, and LMArena's runner-up, GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst, is left out of the table because it has under 3,000 votes.
Best overall: GPT Image
OpenAI's image models take the top three places on Artificial Analysis and five of the top five on LMArena counting versions, and GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst also leads LMArena's single image editing board (1517, Nov 2, 2026). They are what ChatGPT uses to make and edit images, so they are also the easiest to reach. In his May 10, 2026 comparison, Dan Kieft said he would pick GPT Image 2 over Nano Banana about 80% of the time for prompt adherence, text and realism, and Midjourney for art. See GPT Image and ChatGPT.
Best from Google: Nano Banana
Google's Nano Banana 2.1 (released Oct 2026, per Artificial Analysis) is the highest-ranked non-OpenAI model on Artificial Analysis and eighth for editing on LMArena. It is built into the Gemini app and, since Jan 28, 2026, edits images on any web page from Gemini in Chrome (Google). Google's older Imagen 4 Ultra now ranks 39th on LMArena. In an Oct 27, 2026 test of four free image generators, Youri van Hofwegen found Nano Banana 2 in Gemini as good as GPT Image at illustration styles, keeping even the smoke in a 16-bit pixel art scene made of square pixels.
Best for commercial safety: Adobe Firefly
Adobe says outputs of its own Firefly models are "safe for commercial use", and eligible enterprise customers can get IP indemnification for select outputs. As of Nov 6, 2026 Firefly has a free plan with daily generations, and paid plans of $9.99 (2,000 credits), $19.99 (4,000), $49.99 (10,000) and $199.99 a month (50,000), which also unlock partner models from Google, OpenAI and Flux at a credit cost. Firefly's own models are not on either leaderboard.
Ideogram, Recraft and Seedream
ByteDance's Seedream 5.0 Pro is 16th on both boards, the best of the rest. Ideogram 4.0 (22nd on LMArena, 32nd on Artificial Analysis) and Recraft V4.1 (28th and 30th) rank well below the leaders on these general votes, which use random prompts rather than design briefs; if you already use them for posters or logos, test the leaders on the same brief before switching. In Youri van Hofwegen's Oct 27, 2026 test, every tool spelled a four-line poster right, and Ideogram, best known for text, got every word right but kept getting the scene around it wrong.
Best open weights: Flux and Qwen-Image
Flux from Black Forest Labs ranks 13th on Artificial Analysis with FLUX 3 Image (Oct 2026), and its FLUX 3 Image Klein model for editing has open weights you can run on your own hardware, under licenses that differ for commercial and non-commercial use. Artificial Analysis's best open-weights model is Alibaba's Qwen-Image-2.1 (21st); LMArena's is Cosmos3-Super-Text2Image (29th). Stable Diffusion 3.5 Large, once the open standard, now ranks 83rd of 84 on LMArena. See Run AI Locally.
Best free
Adobe Firefly has a free plan with daily generations. GPT Image is in ChatGPT and Nano Banana in Gemini, both of which have free plans; how many free images each allows changes often, so check their pages. In Youri van Hofwegen's Oct 27, 2026 test, ChatGPT's free plan gave about three GPT Image 2.5 images a day and Gemini's about 20 Nano Banana 2 images, each with a watermark, and he noted both numbers move with demand. The Free AI Tools guide keeps the list.

How we chose
Rankings come from two blind-vote leaderboards read on Nov 6, 2026: LMArena's Text-to-Image and image-edit boards (updated Nov 2, 2026) and Artificial Analysis's Image Arena. Prices come from the makers' own pricing pages read the same day. Models absent from both leaderboards are described, not ranked. A leaderboard measures which image voters prefer for random prompts; it does not measure style control, licensing or speed, so the task verdicts weigh those too. See AI Leaderboards.
