Best AI Chatbot

As of Nov 6, 2026, ChatGPT is the best all-round AI chatbot and the best free one, Claude is best for coding and agent work, and Gemini tops the general text leaderboard and is the best value for Google users.

The best AI chatbot for most people on Nov 6, 2026 is ChatGPT: it has the widest set of tools and the most generous free plan, with unlimited everyday text chats on GPT-6. Pick Claude for coding and long agent tasks, where Claude Opus 5.5 is first on LMArena WebDev and Terminal-Bench 4.0. Pick Gemini for the top-rated answers in general chat (Google's Gemini 4 Carbon and Argon are first and second on LMArena Text) and for the best bundle if you live in Gmail and Google Drive. Microsoft Copilot is the pick inside Word and Excel.

The three leaders are close, and the gap moves every few weeks: OpenAI, Anthropic and Google each released new flagship models between Sep 1 and Oct 28, 2026. The verdicts below say which leaderboard backs each one and when it was read.

Best overall: ChatGPT

ChatGPT puts chat, search, deep research, image creation, voice, files, an agent workspace (ChatGPT Work) and the Codex coding agent in one app, and every plan includes some of each. Since Oct 7, 2026 its answers can include charts, maps, forms and small interactive tools. OpenAI said that day that more than 1.2 billion people use it weekly. It does not top the main leaderboards: GPT-6 Astra is behind Claude Opus 5.5 on WebDev and Terminal-Bench, and no OpenAI model is in the top 15 of LMArena Text as read on Nov 6, 2026.

Best for writing and everyday questions: Gemini

On LMArena's text leaderboard (as of Oct 27, 2026), where people vote between two anonymous answers, Gemini 4 Carbon scores 1528 and Gemini 4 Argon 1520, ahead of Claude Opus 5.5 at 1509 and Meta's Muse Wonder at 1507. Most subscribers can only use Argon so far, since Google gave Carbon first to selected cybersecurity defenders. Claude is the close alternative for long, careful writing.

Best for coding: Claude

Claude Opus 5.5 is first on LMArena WebDev with 1810, ahead of GPT-6 Astra at 1773 and Claude Sonnet 5.5 at 1770 (as of Oct 27, 2026). On Terminal-Bench 4.0 (read Nov 6, 2026), which tests agents on real terminal tasks, Opus 5.5 in Claude Code resolves 64.8%, Sonnet 5.5 61.8%, and GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol in Codex tie at 58.2%. GPT-6.1 Sol reached that score at an eighth of Opus 5.5's run cost ($0.6k against $4.7k), so ChatGPT's Codex is the value pick. The Best AI Coding Agent guide goes deeper.

Best for agents and long tasks: Claude

LMArena's agent ranking puts Claude Opus 5.5 first (20.14%), Gemini 4 Carbon second (16.72%) and Claude Sonnet 5.5 third (15.42%) (read Nov 6, 2026). Claude's agent mode, Cowork, has been part of every paid chat since Sep 16, 2026. ChatGPT Work and Gemini's agents are the alternatives; Google's always-on Gemini Spark is limited to Ultra subscribers in the US. In a Feb 10, 2026 video, Paul J Lipsky showed Cowork in the Mac app working with the files on his computer and called Claude's models among the best for agents.

Best for research and search: a draw

On LMArena's Search leaderboard (as of Oct 13, 2026), OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol and Alibaba's Qwen3.8-Max tie at 1261, followed by Claude Opus 4.6 at 1251. ChatGPT and Gemini both include Deep Research on their free plans, and Gemini's reads hundreds of sites per report. Perplexity is built around cited search, and NotebookLM is better when you want answers only from your own documents. In Versus's Jan 24, 2026 deep research test, comparing two phones for photographers, all four chatbots it tried picked a winner from reviews and specs, and Versus scored Gemini's answer highest for being clear and accurate.

Best for images and video: Gemini and ChatGPT

Both create and edit images in the chat. Google's plans add video (Gemini Omni Flash from Plus up) and music (Lyria 3.5), per Google's plan comparison, and Gemini Omni 1.2 Flash is first on LMArena's text-to-video ranking (read Nov 6, 2026). In Versus's Jan 24, 2026 image test, Gemini's image scored highest, ChatGPT's came next, and Claude, which cannot create images, scored nothing. For dedicated tools see Best AI Image Generator and Best AI Video Generator.

Best free AI chatbot: ChatGPT

ChatGPT's Free plan has no cap on everyday text chats, only on tools, while Claude's Free plan is limited every five hours and weekly, and Gemini's limits are based on compute and refresh every five hours until a weekly cap. The catch: OpenAI shows ads to Free and Go users in the US. Gemini's free plan is the most generous with extras (Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems and 15 GB of storage). See Free AI Tools.

Best value: Google AI Pro or ChatGPT Go

The cheapest paid plans are Google AI Plus at $4.99 and ChatGPT Go at $8. At about $20, Google AI Pro ($19.99) includes 5 TB of storage and Gemini in Gmail and Docs, which ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro ($20 each) do not, and Mistral's Le Chat Pro is cheaper at $14.99. At the top, ChatGPT Pro 200, Claude Ultra and Google AI Ultra 20x all cost about $200, and ChatGPT Pro 500 ($500) is the most expensive consumer plan of the big three. Claude Max ($100) and Claude Ultra ($200) include API credits equal to their price. In a Feb 10, 2026 video, Paul J Lipsky made the same case for Google's bundle: Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Chrome, with NotebookLM and Flow included in a Google AI plan. AI Subscription Prices lists every plan.

Best inside Office: Microsoft Copilot

If you pay for Microsoft 365, Copilot already works in the desktop Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote from the $9.99 Personal plan. Microsoft does not say which model each plan runs, and it removed several consumer features in Aug 2026, including consumer Deep Research.

Privacy

OpenAI uses consumer ChatGPT content to train its models unless you opt out. Claude lets you see and delete each memory topic and choose whether sensitive topics are kept, per its Aug 25, 2026 release notes. The defaults differ by maker and change often; AI Privacy Compared lists each one with links to the policies.

How we chose

Every ranking above was read on the leaderboard's own page on Nov 6, 2026, with the date the leaderboard itself shows: LMArena (people voting between anonymous answers, separately for text, web development, search, agents and video), Terminal-Bench 4.0 (agents on terminal tasks, with cost) and the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index (a mix of hard tests, where Gemini 4 Carbon leads with 60 and Claude Opus 5.5 follows with 59). Prices and plan contents come from each maker's pricing and help pages, or, for Google's US prices, from 9to5Google's dated reports. No ranking here is our own test. See AI Leaderboards for what each one measures.
