Le Chat, the assistant from the French company Mistral AI, is now called Vibe: on May 28, 2026 Mistral merged it with its coding agent of the same name, so one app and one plan cover chat, long work tasks and coding, and every Le Chat conversation and plan carried over. It is free with limits, and Pro costs $14.99 a month (as of Nov 6, 2026). It runs on Mistral's own models, whose flagship, Mistral Large 4, is open weight.

Vibe is the main European-made alternative to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, and its Pro plan costs less than their $20 tiers. Choose it if you want an assistant from an EU company whose top models you can also download and run yourself. Features

Work mode. An agent for multi-step tasks: it plans, asks for your sign-off, then works across your inbox, calendar, documents and connected apps, and asks before sensitive actions such as sending a message, Mistral says. Tasks can be scheduled daily, weekly or monthly.

Code mode. Remote coding agents that run in the cloud in an isolated sandbox, connect to GitHub and finish with a pull request. The same agent runs in the Vibe CLI and a VS Code extension, a rival to Claude Code and Codex.

Models

Vibe runs on Mistral's own models. Mistral Medium 3.5, a 128-billion-parameter model released as open weights, became Le Chat's default in May 2026. Mistral Large 4, nicknamed Le Chonk, is a 1-trillion-parameter multimodal model previewed on Oct 6, 2026 and released as open weights on Oct 29, 2026; Mistral says it is free to use commercially, except that model-as-a-service businesses need a separate license. On the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index it scored 48%, which Mistral calls effectively tied with GLM-5.3, the leading open model.

Privacy and data

Mistral's help center says Vibe conversations are used for training by default unless you opt out; Enterprise accounts start with training off. Mistral trained Large 4 in its own data centers in Europe and runs a European deployment under European law. Compare in AI Privacy Compared.

Le Chat vs the alternatives

ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini offer more top-ranked models and tools for $20 a month; pick one of them for the strongest results. DeepSeek, Qwen and GLM are the other open-weight makers with their own chat apps, generally cheaper in the API.
