Is Claude free?
Yes. Claude's Free plan includes chat on the web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation, code execution, memory, app connectors, Artifacts, and Claude Design, Slides and Docs, using Claude Sonnet and Haiku. Usage is limited every five hours and weekly, so heavy users hit a wall sooner than on ChatGPT's Free plan. The bigger models (Opus and Fable), Claude Code and Claude in Chrome need Pro or higher.

Models
Claude Fable 5.1, released on Sep 1, 2026, is Anthropic's most capable public model, at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens in the API. Anthropic says it is the same underlying model as Claude Mythos 5.1, which runs with looser safeguards and is offered only to vetted organizations through Anthropic's cyber and life sciences verification programs.
Claude Opus 5.5 (Sep 22, 2026) is the everyday heavy model, at $4 and $20 per million tokens with a 1 million token context window. Claude Sonnet 5.5 (Sep 28) costs $2 and $10, and Claude Haiku 5.5 (Oct 7) from $0.10 and $0.50, the cheapest on Anthropic's price list.
Features
Cowork in every chat. Since Sep 16, 2026, Claude's agent mode, Cowork, is part of every conversation on paid plans: tasks, projects, connectors and skills carry over without picking a mode, so Claude can plan and carry out multi-step work on your files and apps.
Artifacts, Design, Slides and Docs. Claude can build documents, slide decks, designs and small apps beside the chat. Artifacts are on every plan, including Free, per the same release notes.
Claude Code. Anthropic's coding agent for the terminal, IDE, desktop and web comes with Pro and above; see Claude Code and Best AI Coding Agent.
Memory. Since Aug 25, 2026, memory spans chat and Cowork; you can edit or delete each remembered topic, and a setting decides whether sensitive topics such as health are kept.
Claude in Chrome and connectors. Paid plans can let Claude act in your browser and connect to services such as Microsoft 365. Newer additions include Personal Finance (beta, Nov 5, 2026, US only, Pro, Max and Ultra) and the Claude Duet research preview (Oct 21, 2026, Pro and Max).

Anthropic released Claude on Mar 14, 2023. The Claude 5 family arrived in 2026 (Terminal-Bench dates Claude Fable 5 to Jun 9 and Opus 5 to Jul 24), and the 5.1 and 5.5 models above followed in Sep and Oct 2026. On Oct 26, 2026, Anthropic filed an S-1 with the SEC for a proposed initial public offering.

Microsoft Copilot is the better fit inside Word, Excel and Outlook for Microsoft 365 subscribers.
